California, the land of endless horizons, offers more than just Hollywood allure. With over 840 miles of breathtaking coastline and an array of diverse landscapes, this state promises an unforgettable adventure for those who seek it. From its rolling hills and vibrant beaches to vast forests, azure waters, misty overlooks, and snow-capped peaks, California’s natural grandeur is the perfect canvas for those looking to romanticize exploration. These are the best places to elope in Northern California.
As a Destination Wedding & Elopement Photographer, one of the most exhilarating aspects of my work is the process of location scouting. This isn’t just an excuse for more travel – though, who could resist that? – but a critical element in crafting a well-informed, immersive experience. Scouting allows me to delve into the subtleties of each location, understanding the nuances of light, weather, wildlife patterns, local vendors, and the rhythm of the land. While the natural world is ever-changing and full of surprises, this groundwork ensures that, no matter what unfolds, the experience remains rich and seamless.
Northern California is one of my favorite corners of the planet, which makes every trip to this part of the west coast an exhilarating one. Each trip has also given me the opportunity to experience each location through multiple seasons and weather types, which has made every location scouting endeavor well-rounded. I curated a resource that highlights the best places to elope in Northern California, and why they are a worthy choice for eloping couples. Let’s begin with Big Sur, one of the most recognized staples of California’s beauty.
Big Sur is renowned as the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the contiguous U.S. It’s a place where nature’s splendor is on full display. The noteable scenery along this famous California highway is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Every turn reveals breathtaking vistas, from the rugged cliffs to the expansive ocean views. Big Sur offers an abundance of scenic overlooks, easily accessible along the highway, as well as a variety of hiking trails that wind through its diverse landscapes.
For couples seeking a location that blends majestic beauty with intimate seclusion, Big Sur is unparalleled. Its dynamic terrain provides a myriad of settings to exchange vows, each with its own unique character and charm. Given its popularity, I recommend planning your elopement during the week. Start early in the day to fully appreciate the serenity of this extraordinary place. You can easily count on spending a full day discovering all that this area has to offer, so plan accordingly.
Permits & Regulations: Most elopements or intimate weddings require permits, especially if you plan to host your ceremony in state parks like Julia Pfeiffer Burns, Garrapata, Pfeiffer Big Sur, and Andrew Molera. However, there are some areas of Big Sur that do not require any permits including , Pfeiffer Beach in Los Padres National Forest and Limekiln State Park. For more permit-free photo ops, the overlooks along Highway 1 host a vast display of Big Sur’s varying landscapes, colors, and atmospheres. Check out this site for more permit and regulation info regarding the Big Sur area.
Accessibility: While some locales are easily accessible, many Big Sur locations are off the beaten path. Cell service is limited, so it’s important to be attentive to navigating the winding roads. Be sure to plan for extra travel time, bring appropriate footwear for rugged trails, and account for light loss as the day progresses. Remember to stay on marked trails, avoid unsafe cliff edges, and be conscious of nearby wildlife and protected plant species.
Best Times to Visit: The fall and spring, (think late September to mid-April), provide the best weather. There’s also lower tourist traffic during this time. Big Sur accumulates such a wide range of weather types – misty rain from low clouds, full sun on the coast, intense bouts of fog, and brisk nights – so come fully prepared to encounter all of the area’s dramatic moods. December – February usually brings more rain, while the foggy season usually peaks in July – August, but runs from late spring to early fall. My two favorite months to visit Big Sur are September and February.

Nestled in Sonoma County, Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve is a hidden gem. It offers a tranquil escape into nature’s embrace. This park, which protects 805 acres of remarkable coast redwoods, is a sanctuary of towering trees, lush ferns, and peaceful streams. For couples who dream of saying “I do” beneath the ancient canopy of redwoods but prefer a quieter, more secluded spot, Armstrong is an ideal choice.
The hiking trails are lined with magnificent trees, providing a magical setting for an elopement. Nearby, Sonoma County’s renowned vineyards and wineries offer exceptional service, tours, and local products, perfect for celebrating after your ceremony. To capture the ethereal light that filters through the treetops, I suggest starting your elopement around 10am. The interplay of sunlight and shadows creates a truly fairytale-like atmosphere that will make your photos most certainly unforgettable.
Permits & Regulations: A permit is required for weddings and elopements, with fees reported to cost between $200 – $400. You must contact the state park directly to reserve. They open reservations up to 18 months in advance, but you can obtain a permit within 30 days. It’s strongly recommended to book as early as possible. Find additional information for Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve here.
Accessibility: The flat trails make this ideal for couples who want an easy and slow-paced experience. It’s also ideal for couples with guests of all ages. Parking is limited, so plan to arrive early. Armstrong is also close by to other staples of Sonoma County. Some of these include Sonoma Coast State Park, Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, and Salt Point State Park.
Best Times to Visit: Armstrong is a place that maintains it’s quality year-round. April through June is a favorable time to visit. Although, it’s safe to assume that you can’t go wrong during any time of year. If you’re planning your elopement, check weather and park conditions in the weeks leading up to your celebration.
Point Reyes National Seashore is a crown jewel of Marin County. It is a destination that captivates with its wild beauty and rich biodiversity. Located just an hour from San Francisco, Point Reyes offers the perfect balance between wilderness and accessibility. Spanning over 71,000 acres, this preserve is home to more than 1,500 species of plants and animals. Point Reyes offers top-tier views of the Pacific Ocean and an array of landscapes to explore. It’s no wonder why this is one of the best places to elope in Northern California.
Whether it’s the rainbow-colored grasses, the dreamy shoreline, or the rolling hills, Point Reyes is a nature lover’s paradise. Wildlife enthusiasts will delight in the sight of elephant seals, deer, coyotes, and elk – all set against the backdrop of the open ocean. Despite its popularity, Point Reyes’ expansive terrain and numerous access points make it easy to find a secluded spot for your ceremony. Don’t miss the chance to visit the historic lighthouse or, if the season is right, witness the somewhat-rare spectacle of whale watching. Split the day between Point Reyes and downtown San Francisco for the ultimate elopement experience. Why not combine the best of both worlds?
Permits & Regulations: Elopements and weddings in Point Reyes National Seashore require a special use permit for commercial photography, (typically $150). Permit costs largely depend on the amount of people in your party, including yourselves and the photographer and/or videographer. Permits can feel like a challenging task to navigate, but that’s what I’m here for! An experienced photographer should be able to help you apply for all of the necessary permits you’ll need to obtain. Remember that you don’t have to do this yourselves! Here’s some more information on permits directly from Point Reyes National Seashore.
Accessibility: Point Reyes accounts for a huge area. The accessibility of locations throughout this park vary. Some areas are incredibly easy to access, while others require a degree of hiking. Here are some trail recommendations that take approximately 1 -3 hours to complete: Tomales Point Trail, Chimney Rock Trail, and Elephant Seal Overlook Trail. If you want a lengthier, full-day excursion, Alamere Falls and Wildcat Beach are adventurous options. For a full list of hikes and their parameters, visit https://www.nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/hiking_guide.htm
Best Times to Visit: The spring, fall, or winter are the best times to visit. In the winter, there are fewer crowds, there’s usually more visibility aside from a few stormy days here and there, and you have a higher chance of seeing whales, elephant seals, or sea lions. Springtime grants you access to wildflowers and lush landscapes in select areas. In the fall, you can expect to see the best weather temps and the lowest fog levels. Despite whenever you decide to visit, stick to designated trails, and be mindful of tides if near the coast at all.
South Lake Tahoe, settled in the Sierra Nevada mountains, is one of California’s most well-known destinations. It’s a retreat for adventure-seeking couples who love outdoor activities like snowboarding, skiing, hiking, boating, and fishing. This picturesque city offers a wealth of recreational opportunities. It houses vibrant sunrises over snow-capped mountains, and crystal-clear waters of the lake. The views you can see from a ride on the gondola are enough to make your heart skip a beat.
Tahoe’s blend of natural beauty and modern amenities make it a perfect spot for any elopement. It’s uniquely ideal for wintery celebrations. Whether you’re exploring the ski resorts, relaxing on the beaches, or enjoying the charming shops, restaurants, and breweries in town, South Lake Tahoe promises a memorable experience.
Permits & Regulations: Depending on your precise elopement site, a permit may be required for your ceremony and/or photography. Lake Tahoe is divided between California and Nevada, so it’s necessary to check local requirements based on your location choice(s). Some of the best elopement spots throughout Lake Tahoe include Emerald Bay State Park, Sand Harbor, and Monkey Rock Trail.
Accessibility: Some locations, like Emerald Bay, require hiking, but others offer more accessible options. Be attentive of road conditions in winter months, and prepare accordingly. Lake Tahoe houses a fragile alpine ecosystem. It is vital to respect the natural surroundings of the area, while obeying outdoor regulations in effect.
Best Times to Visit: If you want to beat the crowds, fall or spring is going to be best suited for you. However, if you’re after the winter wonderland views or superb winter sporting conditions, schedule your trip during December – February. If summer is more of your speed, average temps in Lake Tahoe sit around the mid 70’s, creating perfect conditions for beachside ceremonies or celebrations.
