• There are no residency requirements to be married in California.
• You will need to obtain a California marriage license from any county in the state. To do so, you and your spouse will need to appear in person at the County Clerk’s office. Be prepared to present a valid photo I.D. that confirms your date of birth, has an issuance date, and an expiration date. Some counties may require a copy of your birth certificate.
• If you or your spouse have been married before, you need to provide the specific date your marriage ended, and how it ended, (death, dissolution, divorce, or nullity). You may be asked to provide a copy of the final judgement if your marriage ended via dissolution or nullity.
• Marriage licenses are valid for 90 days from the date you obtain it. If you do not marry within that timeframe, you will have to apply for a new one.
• Your officiant, or the person solemnizing your marriage, must return the original marriage license to the same County Clerk within 10 days of your ceremony date.
• California law dictates that you must have a witness for your ceremony. If you elope in Big Sur alone, your photographer and/or videographer can fulfill this role.

The best times to elope in Big Sur include the fall and the spring. Although Big Sur is gorgeous year-round, September to April provides the best weather, and lower tourist traffic. This region of California accumulates a wide range of weather types. You can generally expect anything from full sun and bouts of misty rain, to intense fog and chilly nights. Come fully prepared to embrace all of the area’s dramatic elements, as they add to the enchantment of the experience. December through February usually brings more scattered rain, while the foggy season tends to peak from July to August. The temperatures in Big Sur remain fairly moderate throughout the year, but temperatures can quickly shift as the day progresses. Personally, our favorite months to visit Big Sur are September and February.

Pro Tip: We recommend planning your Big Sur elopement on a weekday in the “off-season”. You will likely beat the crowds, and you’ll certainly have better opportunities to enjoy these vast landscapes in a more secluded fashion.

Traveling to Big Sur

Big Sur is accessible via California’s Highway 1. While the drive is one of the most beautiful in the states, it’s also winding and requires extra focus if you’re unfamiliar with the terrain. Additionally, cell service is limited. Prepare for extra travel time, and download any offline maps you need. The three closest airports to Big Sur are Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC), and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
