Its dynamic terrain provides a myriad of settings to exchange vows, each with its own unique character and charm. Given its popularity, I recommend planning your elopement during the week. Start early in the day to fully appreciate the serenity of this extraordinary place. You can easily count on spending a full day discovering all that this area has to offer, so plan accordingly.

Permits & Regulations: Most elopements or intimate weddings require permits, especially if you plan to host your ceremony in state parks like Julia Pfeiffer Burns, Garrapata, Pfeiffer Big Sur, and Andrew Molera. However, there are some areas of Big Sur that do not require any permits including , Pfeiffer Beach in Los Padres National Forest and Limekiln State Park. Best Times to Visit: The fall and spring, (think late September to mid-April), provide the best weather. There’s also lower tourist traffic during this time. Big Sur accumulates such a wide range of weather types – misty rain from low clouds, full sun on the coast, intense bouts of fog, and brisk nights – so come fully prepared to encounter all of the area’s dramatic moods. December – February usually brings more rain, while the foggy season usually peaks in July – August, but runs from late spring to early fall. Permits & Regulations: A permit is required for weddings and elopements, with fees reported to cost between $200 – $400. You must contact the state park directly to reserve. They open reservations up to 18 months in advance, but you can obtain a permit within 30 days. It’s strongly recommended to book as early as possible. Accessibility: The flat trails make this ideal for couples who want an easy and slow-paced experience. It’s also ideal for couples with guests of all ages. Parking is limited, so plan to arrive early. Armstrong is also close by to other staples of Sonoma County. Some of these include Sonoma Coast State Park, Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, and Salt Point State Park.

Best Times to Visit: Armstrong is a place that maintains it’s quality year-round. April through June is a favorable time to visit. Here are some trail recommendations that take approximately 1 -3 hours to complete: Tomales Point Trail, Chimney Rock Trail, and Elephant Seal Overlook Trail. If you want a lengthier, full-day excursion, Alamere Falls and Wildcat Beach are adventurous options. Accessibility: Some locations, like Emerald Bay, require hiking, but others offer more accessible options. Be attentive of road conditions in winter months, and prepare accordingly.
